IF-A shuts down Lynx offense, rolls to NCC win

WEBSTER CITY – A rough stretch offensively for the Webster City baseball team didn’t get any better as it wrapped up a three-game week at Lynx Field Friday night.

It didn’t really matter that the Lynx pitchers were able to find the strike zone, or that the defense played one of its cleaner games of the season.

WCHS simply couldn’t generate enough with its bats and Iowa Falls-Alden did all the scoring it would need in a big fourth inning to claim the North Central Conference victory, 6-1.

“To sum it up pretty quickly, they hit and we did not,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “We continue to not hit the ball. We are struggling to be aggressive early in the count and we are far too often defensive in our swings.”

It was the fourth straight loss and sixth in seven outings for the Lynx (5-14, 3-8 NCC). WCHS has dropped five consecutive league decisions.

In the three-game stretch that spanned five days, WCHS was outscored 18-2.

“We are not going to win a lot of games the rest of the way scoring two runs total in a week,” Fisher said.

IF-A (6-15, 3-8 NCC) piled up the majority of its nine hits in the six-run fourth inning that saw the Cadets run WCHS starter Cameron Moen off the mound. The sophomore right-hander was on the hook for all six runs and eight of the hits.

The one bright spot of the evening was freshman reliever Dylan Steen, who fanned five and allowed just one hit over 31?3 innings of work.

“I thought this was the best Steen has pitched all year when he came in,” Fisher said.

Luke Norem went 2 for 4 with two RBI and Kolten Peterson laced a single and double for the Cadets. Kyle Arends also drove in two runs on a base hit.

Peterson needed just 82 pitches to toss a complete-game six-hitter to earn the victory. He struck out three Lynx batters against just one walk.

The Lynx avoided the shutout in the fifth inning on a RBI base hit by Max Hackbarth that brought Cole Reigelsberger around to the dish. Reigelsberger also singled, as did Steen, Romel Martinez, Ty Schnathorst and Bryan Ferrell.

WCHS will head to Clarion to take on Clarion-Goldfield-Dows on Wednesday, followed by a Thursday varsity doubleheader at home against second-ranked (Class 2A) Clear Lake.
