Speed, speed and more speed for WCHS softball

WEBSTER CITY – When Allie Flaws reaches first base, she’s headed to second as soon as possible. That’s not a guess or wild speculation, that’s just a fact.

Don’t be surprised when she jets off to third, too.

Webster City’s senior lead-off speedster put her wheels in motion often Friday night at Lynx Field, as she swiped a career-high seven bases to help the Lynx remain flawless in the North Central Conference with a 9-4 victory over Fort Dodge St. Edmond.

The game was called after five innings due to a downpour that quickly put standing water on the field.

Reaching base four times, Flaws stole second and third in the first, fourth and fifth innings. She was somewhat kind in the second when she was satisfied with just taking second before scoring one of her three runs.

Flaws had just one official at bat – it produced a second-inning single – and was disciplined enough to secure three walks against Gaels’ hurler Lily Timmerman.

“(Flaws) did a great job in that lead-off spot of being a patient batter,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said. “It’s so important to make the pitcher throw some pitches.”

WCHS (4-0 NCC) continued to lean on its speed up and down the lineup to apply the pressure to the Gaels. Howard’s club sprayed eight singles across the yard and stole 10 bases. Haley Flaws, who went 1 for 3 with two runs scored, collected two of them and Kali Dawson added one in addition to two hits in three plate appearances.

In recent years, the Lynx have relied on power to pick up wins. But with the personnel currently at her disposal, Howard has opted to take a different route this season, and so far it’s paying off.

“You’ve got to use your strengths and speed is our strength this year,” she said. “It definitely worked to our advantage (Friday night). We got girls on and were able to take bases when they were given to us.”

WCHS scored in all five of its at bats. A two-run first inning, followed by two more in the second put the Lynx in front to stay. St. Edmond closed to within 5-3 in the top of the fourth, but WCHS answered with three runs in the bottom to increase the cushion.

Courtney Lampman plated a pair of runs in the win on a first-inning single and a fourth-inning ground-out. Taylor McKinney came off the bench to supply a base hit to right field and she touched home plate twice. Cynthia Whitehill smacked a base hit and Erin Bahrenfuss jumped aboard on a perfectly-executed bunt single.

St. Edmond (1-6, 1-3 NCC) strung together seven hits off Lynx right-hander Gabbi Hoversten. Timmerman did all she could to help her own cause with a 3 for 3 night at the dish, and Macey Mason roped a single and double and drove in a run. Jocy Timmerman belted a two-RBI single in the first inning.

Hoversten struck out five and only two of the Gaels’ runs were earned. The Lynx defense was still shaky at times, but was able to get key outs when needed.

“The girls have come out and are playing really well,” Howard said. “We’ve had a few defensive miscues in there, but we’ve done a good job of keeping our composure and playing through it.”

WCHS will look to remain unbeaten in league play this evening when it makes the trek north to take on Algona at 7:15 p.m.
