Olson’s arm, Ferrell’s bat carry WCHS past Titans in 9

LYTTON – Mop-up duty, or an inning here and there, that’s been the extent of freshman Caleb Olson’s pitching outings for the Webster City baseball team this season prior to Tuesday night.

And after Tuesday night? He may be in line to see a few more innings.

The rookie right-handed hurler saw extended time and thrived in a non-conference contest against South Central Calhoun that the Lynx eventually won in nine innings, 4-3.

Taking over for starter Max Hackbarth with just one out in the second inning, Olson went the remainder of the way and threw 7 2/3 innings to help WCHS (5-10) end a two-game losing streak.

Olson, a first-time varsity winner, was touched for five hits and walked five, but South Central Calhoun (14-7) was never able to get the better of the match-up. He allowed just one earned run in the third inning and then kept the Titans to goose eggs over the final six innings while tossing 93 pitches.

“Caleb came in and pitched sensationally,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “He pounded the zone, stayed positive and really competed and kept us in the game.”

Olson worked his way out of a ninth-inning jam to help preserve the victory and he also got plenty of aid from a defense that committed just two errors. Shortstop Romel Martinez and second baseman Noah McKinney turned three double plays to add to the Titans’ frustrations.

“Defensively we played much better,” Fisher said. “Not only in turning three huge double plays … but also in the routine plays and just situational stuff.”

WCHS, which won the season series 2-1, out hit the Titans 8-6. Bryan Ferrell went 3 for 4 near the bottom of the order and was responsible for the go-ahead RBI base knock in the top of the ninth. Jordan Tanner belted a single and double, Dylan Steen also parked one in the gap for a double, and Martinez and Ty Schnathorst added singles. Martinez also drove in one run.

Derrick Henkenius lashed half of South Central Calhoun’s hits, all singles. Cyle King and Colin Carlson produced one RBI each.

The Titans opened up a 3-1 lead early on and maintained the advantage until WCHS pushed one across in the fifth and another in the sixth to draw even.

WCHS was at Fort Dodge St. Edmond last night.
