Vogelbacher scores 10th, 11th goals; WCHS girls blank ’Cats

HUMBOLDT – One loss didn’t fester and turn into two for the Webster City girls’ soccer team here Monday night.

Just three days removed from a disappointing 4-0 loss to Iowa Falls-Alden, the Lynx looked more like themselves and in turn got back to .500 on the season with a 2-0 victory over Humboldt.

“The girls rebounded well,” WCHS head coach Paul Baedke said. “They pretty much put that (IF-A) game behind them … We kind of dominated the game and controlled most of it.”

The numbers back up that claim. WCHS (4-4) owned a 16-5 advantage in shots, including 12-5 on goal. Lynx goalkeeper Maia Jaycox collected five saves to preserve the shutout.

Locked in a scoreless stalemate throughout most of the first half, the Lynx received the adrenaline shot they needed less than four minutes before the intermission on an unassisted goal by sophomore forward Sarah Vogelbacher. It was her 10th goal of the season.

The score remained 1-0 until the 76th minute when Vogelbacher took a pass from Hannah Williams and slammed the ball into the back of the net for No. 11.

One goal was enough for the Lynx defense, which blanketed Humboldt (1-5) each time it attempted to push the ball forward. Baedke felt sophomore defensive back Kaitlyn Wagner was a big key in the shutout.

“Kaitlyn Wagner was the one always shutting them down. She was out-running all of them and taking the ball away from them,” Baedke said.

WCHS will return home to face eighth-ranked (Class 1A) Gilbert on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
