Peck secures singles win, Grundy Center trumps Lynx boys

WEBSTER CITY – It doesn’t always show on the scoreboard, but Webster City boys’ tennis coach Ben Jass sees the growth from his team each time it hits the courts.

And, eventually, it will result in success.

But still learning the game, the Lynx suffered an 8-1 loss to more experienced Grundy Center on Monday at the WCHS courts.

“We just have to play more tennis and improve our ground strokes and net play,” Jass said. “But we have great attitudes and the guys are fun to coach. They’re class acts.”

Brandon Peck gave WCHS a taste of victory, as he fought off Grant Weldon, 10-8, in the No. 3 singles match.

“Brandon Peck has improved tremendously,” Jass said. “He’s level-headed.”

WCHS kept two of the three doubles matches competitive until the end, but Grundy Center came up with the key shots when they mattered. The Lynx teams of Steffen Chambers and Kolton Gemmel, and Sean Godfredsen and Ty Mofle were dealt 10-8 setbacks.

Jass also likes what he’s seeing from Chambers and Gemmel in the Nos. 1 and 2 spots.

“Chambers has a great forehand and is playing well, but No. 1 is a tough spot,” he said. “Gemmels and Chambers is a good doubles team.”
