LYNX SEE RED

WEBSTER CITY – The stance: side-hill and uphill. The yardage: 205 to a back-pin position and blind the entire way. The execution: flawless.

And Avery Fuhs never even cracked a smile.

Well, not until the meet was over and he was able to see what he and his teammates accomplished.

Fuhs was one of three Webster City players to shoot under-par on the front nine at Briggs Woods Golf Course yesterday afternoon, as the Lynx posted a ridiculous team score of 5-under 139.

The total broke the nine-hole school record of 142 that some of the team members set during last spring’s run to the Class 3A state championship. Oh yeah, it was also good enough to easily dismantle North Central Conference opponents Algona (193) and Hampton-Dumont (207) at the triangular meet.

“Obviously the number speaks for itself … it’s a confidence-booster for the whole team and it shows we can do something pretty special this year, too,” Avery Fuhs said after turning in a 2-under 34.

Drew Fielder also dug into the red and posted a 34. Fuhs won the medalist honor for the second straight meet on a card-back. His birdie to close out his round at the par-4 ninth swung the leaderboard in his favor.

Connor Shannon was third with a not-too-shabby 1-under 35 and Alec Fuhs fired an even-par 36.

Sean Vogelbacher was in control of his game as well, yet his 1-over 37 couldn’t even factor into the team score.

“We have four or five guys that are capable of playing at par or under-par every time out, so this is really kind of what we expect,” WCHS head coach David Brighton said. “These kids have high expectations about themselves and even with a 139 they weren’t over-celebratory.”

But back to the shot.

After a less-than-idea drive off the 442-yard, par-5 fourth hole, Avery Fuhs found himself with the odd stance and a shot that was as much a guess as anything else. But from 205 yards out, he blistered a 4-iron that was on the line he wanted.

The ball came to rest barely on the fringe, but pin high. He proceeded to bury the 15-foot putt for eagle to get back to 1-under-par at the time and set the tone for the rest of his round.

“There was a jet line in the sky that I used and I hit it right where I wanted to,”?he said. “At first I thought I hit it in the bunker (short of the green), but the wind kept taking it.

“I wasn’t even trying to make the putt, to be honest. It was downhill and the greens were fast and I just wanted to get back to even. It was lucky that it went in.”

Fielder sizzled right off the first tee, as he penciled in birdies at the par-5 first and par-4 second holes, and he added another at the par-4 fifth to reach 3-under. His tee shot on the par-3 seventh sailed over the green and resulted in a bogey, but otherwise it was smooth sailing.

Shannon birdied the first and fifth holes. it was his second strong outing this week; his continued progress and the sharp play of Fielder will be key for the Lynx in their run towards what they hope will be another state championship.

“The reason we shot what we shot and the only way for us to be successful this year is (because of) our juniors,” Avery Fuhs said.

Alec Fuhs appeared to be on his way to joining his under-par teammates. He opened his round with birdies on the first and second holes. He was forced to scramble just to make par on the fourth and then bogeyed the fifth and seventh holes to drop back to even.

“Alec was very disappointed in his round and he ended up with a 36,” Brighton said. “He thought he should have had a 34 or 33.”

Jackson Helmers led Algona with a 43 and Quinn Logan was Hampton-Dumont’s low man with a 51.

WCHS will tee it up in the Spencer Invitational Saturday morning.
