Lynx make leap to tougher competition, take sixth at Waukee

WAUKEE – The Webster City girls’ track and field team could have probably stayed closer to home and found a meet that it could pile up the points and medals.

But why take the easy route?

Instead, the Lynx once again made the long trek south to the metro to compete in the Waukee Girls Relays against a deep and talented field.

And this time WCHS was the small fish in the big pond.

Still, the Lynx scored in 10 events and brought home two medals. They were sixth in the field of 11 teams, while Waukee rolled over 200 points to cruise to the top of the team standings.

Official team points were unknown as of press time.

“That was very high competition to what we’re used to seeing, but the girls weren’t intimidated by the big schools,” WCHS head coach Clint Howard said. “It was a good eye-opener and a good measuring stick against some of the best (Class) 4A schools.”

What didn’t change from previous meets was the prowess of sophomore thrower Cassidy Nerland, who continued to add to her medal haul. She again won the shot put with a best heave of 39 feet, 7 1/2 inches, and then took second in the discus with a top toss of 122-7.

Haley Flaws (4-11) and Haley Johnson (4-7) placed fourth and seventh in the high jump, respectively.

WCHS was shutout of the medals once the meet moved to the track.

Senior sprinter Allie Flaws got a first-hand look at some of state’s best large-class sprinters, including Waukee standout Talia Buss, who ranks No. 1 in the 200-meter dash and No. 3 in the 100. Flaws settled for fourth in both races; she leaned across in the 100 in 12.86 seconds and completed the 200 in 27.47.

“Allie ran right with them,” Howard said. “She competed well.”

WCHS placed fifth and above its seed in both the 4×200 (1:52.41) and 4×100 (52.91) relays.

Other fifth-place finishes went to Cassidy Bultena in the 800 (2:44.85) and the sprint medley relay (2:00.73).
