Hegland pushes school record in final home meet

JEWELL – Alyssa Hegland has won plenty of high jump gold medals and has had the luxury of competing in the Class 2A state meet three times.

It’s safe to say she’s got a treasure trove of memories. She added perhaps the most special one at Tuesday’s George Abell Hawkette Relays.

The field was small and the competition wasn’t intimidating, but in her final appearance in front of her hometown fans, Hegland cemented her legacy as one of South Hamilton’s all-time best high jumpers by clearing 5 feet, 3 inches – three inches higher than her closest rival.

Clean over the bar at 5-0, 5-2 and 5-3 – the bar may have bowed and waved, jumped and waffled, but it never tumbled – the smiling Hegland took three attempts at tying the school record of 5-4 held by Laura Weltha and Anne Nelson, but came up short.

Still, not a bad way to say goodbye to the friendly surroundings.

Hegland gave South Hamilton one of its three victories; the Hawks scored 58 points to share third-place with Roland-Story in the four-team field. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (83) and Nevada (70) occupied the top two spots.

South Hamilton accumulated five silver and two bronze medals.

Sophomore Anna Moss was the team’s top points producer with 12, ahead of Ady Wintermote (8 1/2) and Hegland (8). Moss and Wintermote both collected four medals.

Wintermote gave the Hawks a second triumph in the field events with a discus toss of 102-11. She also ran the anchor legs on the runner-up 4×100-meter relay and third-place 4×200, as well as the third leg on the second-place sprint medley relay.

Lora Molloy, Alissa Moss and Taylor Volkmann joined Wintermote on the 4×100 (54.55 seconds) and 4×200 (1:59.00). The sprint medley (2:04.04) also featured Volkmann and the Moss sisters.

Anna Moss surged to the front of the open 800 field in the first 100 meters and left the remainder of the field in the rearview mirror throughout the two-lap event. She crossed the finish line in a winning time of 2:40.00.

Moss added second-place finishes in the long jump (15-0 1/4) and on the anchor of the distance medley relay (4:48.00). Alissa Moss, Volkmann and Sydney Friest ran the first three legs.

Autymn Olson collected a silver medal in the 400 (1:11.70), while Friest was third in the high jump (4-6).
