Lynx girls bury 8 3’s, thump Gaels by 35 points

FORT DODGE – Now that’s how to get out of a slump.

The best shooting night of the campaign for the Webster City girls’ basketball team yielded a season-high eight 3-point baskets and a 71-36 destruction of North Central Conference rival St. Edmond here Friday night.

A 21-2 spurt that spanned the first and second quarters ignited the rout that ended a four-game losing streak for the Lynx.

Allie Flaws and Gabbi Hoversten combined to can six 3’s and score 28 first-half points, as WCHS (6-10, 5-6 NCC) sprinted into the locker rooms with a 40-20 advantage – more points than the team scored in three games this season. Flaws poured in 17 of her game-high 19 points during the initial 16 minutes. Hoversten finished with 17 points.

A 22-10 run in the third quarter upped the margin to 32 points, 62-30, and allowed head coach Nicole Muhlenbruch to get her bench players plenty of minutes down the stretch.

Cassidy Bultena and Cassidy Nerland also scored in double figures with 11 and 10, respectively, in the win. Bultena rained in a pair of triples.

Nerland (10) and Bultena (nine) combined to yank down 19 rebounds. Nicole Sweazey came up with eight of the Lynx 20 steals, and Hoversten distributed five assists.

Megan Flattery led St. Edmond (1-15, 0-12 NCC) with 12 points.
