Slow starts to each half doom Hawk girls against Gilbert

JEWELL – Low scoring outputs at the start of each half prevented the South Hamilton girls’ basketball team from putting together a real challenge against Heart of Iowa Conference rival Gilbert on Coach Jim Marsh Court Tuesday evening.

The Tigers (11-6, 11-2 HOIC) outscored South Hamilton 21-11 in the first and third quarters and then hit free throws down the

stretch to create even more distance in a 52-35 victory.

“We played a competitive game,” South Hamilton head coach Tony Woodall said. “We just had a bad third quarter and they made their free throws at the end to ice it.”

South Hamilton (1-15, 1-11 HOIC) had a decent night shooting from distance with five 3-point baskets, but still struggled overall with a 21-percent success rate. The Hawks made just 15 percent of their shots from 2-point range (5 of 33).

Diana Garcia cashed in on three triples and scored a team-high 15 points for the Hawks. Anna Moss finished with seven points, seven rebounds and five steals, while Bree Hodnefield chipped in five points and four boards. Raquel Holt also helped out with four points and five caroms.

Sarah Hinners (13 points) and Trinity Jackson (12) both scored in double figures for Gilbert, which led by just two points, 22-20, at the half.

South Hamilton will be on the road against Collins-Maxwell-Baxter on Friday and again on Saturday against South Hardin.
