No. 7 Bulldogs too many weapons for Lynx

WEBSTER CITY – Jordan Prantner carries a hefty-sized bull’s-eye on her back whenever she enters a hostile gymnasium.

But seventh-ranked (Class 3A) Hampton-Dumont is a lot more than just one player. Try to take Prantner away and others simply step to the forefront.

With Webster City doing everything it could to contain Prantner’s outside exploits, the Bulldogs received 16 points from Callie Grover and 14 more from Jessica Speake last night inside the WCHS gymnasium, as Hampton-Dumont remained atop the North Central Conference standings with a 60-41 victory.

Oh, Prantner wasn’t completely shutdown – a near impossibility. She still knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and scored 12, but was quiet compared to the seven 3’s and 30 points she put on WCHS in a 75-48 Bulldog victory on Dec. 15 in Hampton.

“I thought we played tremendous defense, some of the best we’ve played all year,” WCHS head coach Nicole Muhlenbruch said. “Those girls worked their tails off, but when you’re facing five girls that can all shoot the 3, it’s tough.”

Speake drained a pair of bombs as well, while Grover and Nadilee Eiklenborg both hit one.

“Most teams that we’ve come up against may have a key shooter, but Hampton has the two seniors (Prantner and Speake) and then some juniors that can make shots.”

Lynx sophomore forward Cassidy Nerland did all she could to keep her team within earshot, as she came off the bench to provide 14 points, nine rebounds and two steals. Nerland scored 10 points in the second half.

Gabbi Hoversten added eight points, three assists and two steals. Allie Flaws scored all eight of her points in the first half, and Cassidy Bultena registered seven points and seven boards.

Flaws connected on three second-quarter buckets. She buried a 17-foot jumper from the right wing to give WCHS a 22-21 advantage with 3:18 remaining before the half.

Hampton-Dumont (13-2, 9-1 NCC) had the answer through and rattled off the next 12 points to take command for good. The Bulldogs dominated on the offensive glass over the initial 16 minutes; eight of their 12 points during the spurt came on second and third chances.

WCHS (5-10, 4-6 NCC) closed the deficit to single digits, 48-39, 20 seconds into the fourth quarter on a Nerland bucket from close range, but could get no closer than nine. Hampton-Dumont outscored the Lynx 12-2 the remainder of the way.

Stuck in a four-game slide, WCHS will travel to Fort Dodge to face St. Edmond tonight before making the trek to Gilbert to take on the Tigers on Saturday.
