State medalist Allie Flaws will run track at Grand View

WEBSTER CITY – Allie Flaws’ speed has been a known commodity ever since the first day that she stepped onto the Webster City High School track.

That talent has taken her to Des Moines to compete on the state’s biggest prep stage for three consecutive years. It’s the same city that she’ll call home for four years, beginning next fall.

Flaws, a Webster City senior, signed a letter of intent to run track at Grand View University after she graduates in May. She signed on the dotted line Tuesday morning with Vikings’ associate coach Seth Roberson, WCHS girls’ track coach Clint Howard and her parents, Larry and Leslie Flaws, by her side.

One of the school’s all-time elite sprinters, Flaws is a three-time Class 3A state qualifier in the 100-meter dash. She was the only freshman to make the finals field in 2013 on her way to an eighth-place finish. One year later, as a sophomore, she rocketed up to a fourth-place medal in 12.85 seconds.

Flaws was forced to deal with plenty of adversity as a junior, yet still managed to make her way to Drake Stadium once again.

She tore her ACL in the late summer of 2014 and spent the next eight months simply trying to recover. Flaws made it back in time for the 2015 track season, but not at 100 percent. In addition to the knee, she also dealt with hamstring issues all the way through the state meet.

Flaws was 13th in the 100-meter field in May’s state meet.

Flaws’ resume also includes three North Central Conference gold medals and one silver in the individual sprint events. She won the 100 and 200 as a freshman and the 100 as a sophomore. She was the 200 runner-up in 2014.

Flaws missed the 2015 NCC meet because of injury.

In addition to her track and field contributions at WCHS, Flaws has been a repeated letter winner in softball, cross country and basketball. She owns multiple first-team all-conference honors on the softball field.
