Santi scores four TD’s, No. 6 Madrid blanks Hawks

JEWELL – Speed. Strength. Athleticism. The trifecta for success on the football field.

And Madrid has them all in droves.

South Hamilton learned just how talented the sixth-ranked Tigers are Friday night at Taylor Field, as the visitors entered the hostile environment and dominated from the opening kick until the final buzzer.

“They’re the real deal and we knew that going in,” South Hamilton head coach Corey Klemp said of Madrid after the Tigers’ 48-0 rout in the Class 1A District 7 opener for both teams. “From a size and speed standpoint, it was a mismatch. Our kids competed hard, but (the Tigers) are at a different level.”

Madrid (3-0, 1-0) led 20-0 after one quarter and 42-0 at the half. The entire second half was played under a continuous clock.

All-state running back Michael Santi played a key role, as he helped the Tigers out gain South Hamilton 366-144. Santi finished with 299 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns.

Entering the game averaging 14.2 yards per carry, Santi actually increased his output. He carried the ball just eight times and ripped off 138 yards (17.3 yards per carry) and a pair of touchdowns, including a 61-yard sprint to the end zone.

Santi returned a first-quarter punt 70 yards to the house, and later reeled in a 48-yard scoring pass from Aaron Sperling.

Santi finished with two catches that covered 91 yards.

“He’s in a class of his own when it comes to speed and athleticism,” Klemp said of Santi. “I don’t think there’s anyone in the district that will be comparable to him.”

Jayden Moore scored on an 8-yard run for Madrid, Sperling reached the end zone from 5 yards away, and Wyatt Smith bulldozed his way across the goal line from the 1.

Meanwhile, South Hamilton (0-2, 0-1) was unable to sustain drives on the ground, which forced inexperienced quarterback Blake Barquist to sling the ball all over the field. He completed 6 of 17 passes for 56 yards, and even though he was intercepted three times, Klemp said he liked the competitiveness that his signal caller showed.

“He stepped up and made throws and he showed more confidence in what he was doing,” Klemp said of Barquist. “But we were up against athletes that break on the ball a little bit better than we’ve seen.”

Colton Griffin and Logan Klemp both had two catches that netted 23 and 17 yards, respectively.

Just 88 of the Hawks’ yards came on the ground and they were limited to 2.6 yards per carry.

Keaton Hetland churned out a team-best 39 yards on seven carries in the loss. Logan Klemp lugged the ball 12 times for 26 yards. Colton Coy (16) and Jake Hand (14) combined to pick up 30 yards.

Defensive tackle Grant Evans made seven stops, Coy finished with five and Klemp 4 1/2.

South Hamilton will head out on the road for the first time Friday night when it travels to Manson to take on district foe Manson-Northwest Webster (1-2, 1-0) at 7 p.m. The Cougars knocked off 2014 district champion Fort Dodge St. Edmond, 12-6, on Friday.
