Lynx handed five losses, three by ranked opponents, at Algona tournament

ALGONA – A tough schedule and inconsistent play both had starring roles in the Webster City volleyball team’s struggles at Saturday’s Algona Invitational.

The Lynx dropped three matches in three sets and two others in straight sets during a 1-5 performance that left the purple and gold at 2-7 overall on the season.

Ninth-ranked (Class 2A) Lake Mills (21-18, 21-16) and No. 10 (3A) Algona (21-19, 21-11) both swept WCHS, while No. 14 (3A) Spirit Lake (19-21, 21-11, 15-11) survived in three sets. Northwood-Kensett (21-10, 18-21, 15-11) and Belmond-Klemme (14-21, 21-14, 15-9) also disposed of the Lynx.

WCHS picked up its lone win in two sets against North Union (21-19, 21-10).

“We competed against a bunch of quality teams and the girls went point for point in a lot of the games, but we were just unable to finish,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said. “Getting everybody to click at the same time is our big goal right now.”

WCHS hit just .105 with 62 errors against 98 kills. Outside hitter Andi Anderson packed the biggest punch with 24 kills, while Kenzie Garvey, Olivia Myers and Taylor Schnathorst slapped 18 each. Gabbi Hoversten reached double figures as well with 12.

Schnathorst handed out 48 assists and piled up seven service aces. She split the setting duties Courtney Lampman, who distributed 40 assists.

Libero Gianna Gourley led the defense with 71 digs. Back row specialist Carly Jacobson checked in with 34, while Schnathorst (15) and Lampman (11) combined for 26.

WCHS will spend the week preparing for Saturday’s Lynx Invitational, which will get underway at 9 a.m.
