Gregory, 1960 teammates inducted into UNI Hall of Fame

CEDAR FALLS – John Gregory, a Webster City native, was a member of the 1960 football team that was inducted into the University of Northern Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday during the Panthers’ 38-35 victory over Eastern Washington inside the UNI-Dome.

Then the Iowa State Teachers College, the 1960 football team went a perfect 9-0 in the regular season and won the North Central Conference title before it made an appearance in the Mineral Water Bowl in Excelsior Springs, Missouri.

Gregory, an end on the team, went on to have a successful career as a football coach, which began when he was hired to be an assistant and the athletic director at Iowa Central Community College. In just three years with the program, the Tritons put together a 24-3-1 record.

Gregory became the head coach at South Dakota State in 1971 and remained there for a decade. He sits at No. 2 on the school’s all-time wins leaderboard.

Gregory is most known around Iowa as the longtime head coach of the Iowa Barnstormers, an Arena League team that resides in Des Moines. Gregory led the organization to five division titles in six years and two appearances in the Arena Bowl title game.

Gregory was named the AFL Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1996.
