Closing a work in progress, Lynx stuck with two losses

HUXLEY – An inexperienced Webster City volleyball team, particularly up front, learned that it’s not easy to close out sets here Tuesday night.

The Lynx hung around in their matches against host Ballard and 12th-ranked (Class 3A) North Polk, but struggled down the stretch. The result was a pair of 2-0 losses – 25-17, 26-24 against the Bombers and 25-21, 25-23 against the Comets.

“As the night went on we made improvements. We just need to make sure that when it gets down to point 20 that we’re the ones that want to make the plays,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said afterwards. “We just have to learn to stay loose and handle the pressure a little bit better.”

After seeing the bulk of her playing time in the back row a season ago, Kenzie Garvey showed she’s made the transition to the front row. She led the Lynx (0-2) with 10 kills, including eight in the nightcap against North Polk (5-3).

“She did a good job at net for us,” Howard said of Garvey. “She did a great job of controlling her arm swing and making sure she was placing the ball well.”

Olivia Myers registered nine kills on the night, and Hannah Williams, Taylor Schnathorst and Gabbi Hoversten all produced five.

Schnathorst distributed 13 assists.

Libero Gianna Gourley led the defensive effort with 10 digs in each of two matches. She also contributed three service aces. Garvey and Schnathorst both had two aces.

WCHS will make its home and North Central Conference debut this evening against Fort Dodge St. Edmond. The junior varsity match will get underway at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity at approximately 7:15 p.m.
