Hawks’ Lucas, Hegland land on HOIC first team

WEBSTER CITY – The South Hamilton softball team picked up four all-Heart of Iowa Conference honors, including a pair of spots on the first team, it was recently announced.

Senior outfielder Kayla Lucas and junior catcher Alyssa Hegland were recognized as elite players by being placed on the first team by the league coaches. Senior outfielder Carly Swenson and sophomore pitcher Ady Wintermote were both honorable mention selections.

Lucas hit .381 on the season, second on the squad behind only Wintermote (.406). A lefty hitter, Lucas sprayed six doubles and six triples to all parts of the park and drove in a team-best 27 runs.

A multiple-year starter, Lucas was the anchor of the Hawks’ outfield in center. She made just three errors in 33 games on the season.

Hegland hit .320 with three home runs and 16 RBI. She also called all the pitches and threw out three runners attempting to steal.

Wintermote crushed four dingers and plated 20 runs. In the circle, she put together a 12-8 record and 2.69 earned run average. Her season included 51 strikeouts, and opposing batters hit just .266 against her.

Swenson, who played both left field and right field, concluded her career with a .352 average in her senior season. She led the team in home runs with six, and her 21 RBI trailed only Lucas.

Swenson bashed 11 home runs in her career.
