Hawks break out big lumber, outscore foes 33-3 to win Hudson tourney

HUDSON – Dominant from the first swing to the final out, South Hamilton rolled to three victories and the championship at Saturday’s Hudson Tournament.

On the strength of 30 hits – 13 of them went for extra bases, including three home runs – the Hawks outscored their foes 33-3.

“All around it was just a great day and I’m really proud of the girls,” South Hamilton head coach Laura Read said. “It seemed like one person would get it going and then once one person got on base we started stringing it together.”

South Hamilton (5-3) opened the day by pasting Dike-New Hartford, 12-1. Ady Wintermote fanned nine in the circle and helped her own cause with a double. Kayla Lucas lashed a triple and drove in two runs, and Carly Swenson found her power stroke and blasted her first dinger of 2015.

Alyssa Hegland also smacked a triple, while Kayla Carlson and Tiffany Jacobson added two-RBI singles. The Hawks busted open a tight contest with seven runs in the fourth.

A seven-run fourth inning helped the Hawks get past Denver, 8-1, in a game that was shortened to five innings because of the time limit. Leandra Diersen took command on the mound and allowed just two hits while fanning 10.

No. 9 hitter Alissa Moss cracked a single and triple, and drove in a pair of runs. Hegland found the gap for a two-run double; Jacobson connected for two singles and collected one RBI.

Wintermote was back in the circle for the title game – a 13-1, 3-inning trouncing of Grundy Center. The sophomore surrendered just four hits and struck out four. She also bashed her team-best third home run and plated three runs.

Swenson drilled her second dinger of the day – a two-run shot.

“I definitely think (Swenson’s) confidence is up,” Read said. “I feel like she’s getting on track to where she’s typically at.”

Wintermote, Hegland, Diersen, and twins Kayla and Kali Lucas all doubled. South Hamilton touched Spartans’ pitcher Alyssa Matthews for six runs in the first and seven runs in the second.
