HAVE MERCY

JEWELL – Already with a single, double and, oh by the way, a two-hit masterpiece in her back pocket, South Hamilton sophomore Ady Wintermote waited to make her splashiest impact on the final pitch of the game Wednesday evening at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex.

Can you say yard?

Wintermote turned in her most impressive performance of the young season – she wasn’t the only one in a Hawk uniform to do so – in leading South Hamilton to a 10-0, 5-inning thumping of Heart of Iowa Conference rival Gilbert. The contest ended via the mercy rule with two outs in the bottom of the fifth when Wintermote turned on a Kamryn Miller offering and launched it over the fence in left field for her second home run of the season.

A triple short of the cycle, Wintermote finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base.

“The night started off with the whole team building off hits and when the team gets hits I feel so much more confident in myself,” Wintermote said. “Our bats have been really strong so far this year.”

Wintermote was equally effective inside the pitcher’s circle where she limited Gilbert (1-3, 1-3 HOIC) to just two hits – back-to-back singles by Sydney Grouwinkel and Ibby Culek in the third inning. The right-hander struck out four and walked just one.

“(Wintermote) knows that’s her job. She’s always going to throw strikes and let her teammates do the work,” South Hamilton head coach Laura Read said. “And (catcher) Alyssa (Hegland) has done a fantastic job of calling pitches. The take a lot of pride in that.”

Perhaps more encouraging than Wintermote’s effort was the solid defense behind her. The Hawks played error-free on 11 chances behind her.

“Our defense has been awesome all year,” Wintermote said. “When I’m on the mound I know I have the best people out there and I feel so confident.”

South Hamilton (2-2, 2-2 HOIC) roughed up Miller for 12 hits. The first four batters in the Hawks’ lineup – Kayla Lucas, Wintermote, Hegland and Kayla Carlson – combined to go 9-for-13 with six runs scored and eight RBI.

Hegland set the rout in motion with a first-inning blast that easily cleared the fence in left for her first dinger of the season.

The Hawks tacked on five more runs in the second, all of them coming with two outs. Lucas, a lefty slapper, ignited the surge by pounding a base hit back up the middle that brought two runs across. Wintermote followed with a line-drive double down the line in left, Hegland added a second RBI to her haul with an infield single, and Carlson made it 6-0 with a hard shot to center that plated a run.

South Hamilton’s versatility caused headaches for the Tigers. The Hawks hit for power when possible, but also weren’t afraid to play small ball with bunts and stolen bases.

“We have a couple of girls that can hit the ball really hard, but they can also lay down a bunt and beat it out,” Read said. “That makes defenses think a lot and makes it hard to cover.”

Lucas and Wintermote added RBI singles in the Hawks’ three-run third frame.

Kali Lucas, Carly Swenson and Alissa Moss added singles in the win. After hitting in the clean-up spot to open the season, Read opted to move Swenson, a senior, down to No. 7 in the order to help her build confidence. The move seemed to pay off, as she reached base three times.

“She’s just been thinking a lot in the batter’s box,” Read said. “I moved her down (on Wednesday) to try to take that pressure off. I just wanted her to be relaxed and get in rhythm.”

CMB SCORES FINAL 9 RUNS, BEATS HAWKS: Kayla Carlson blasted a first-inning two-run home run, but it was all CMB the rest of the way as the Raiders knocked off South Hamilton, 9-2, last night in Collins.

The Raiders (3-4, 3-2 HOIC) slapped 14 hits off Hawks’ pitchers Ady Wintermote and Leandra Diersen. Wintermote got the loss.

Kayla Lucas produced three singles in the loss. Carly Swenson, Kali Lucas and Allyson Ervin all had one.
