Solid in singles, WCHS boys snag dual win
WEBSTER CITY – A concentrated effort on dominating the singles matches led to an easy Webster City dual-meet victory Tuesday afternoon at the WCHS courts.
The Lynx won five of the six singles bouts and went on to dispose of Hampton-Dumont, 7-2.
“Our singles play was quite a bit better than (in Monday’s loss to Iowa Falls-Alden),” WCHS head coach Bruce Johnston said. “Everybody came ready to play and that was great to see.”
No. 2 singles player Dakon Bergquist (10-5), No. 3 Blake Nelson (10-1), No. 4 Ben Grimshaw (10-7), No. 5 Kolton Gemmel (injury default) and No. 6 Bryan Johnston (10-4) were all singles winners.
Nelson and Grimshaw teamed up to cruise in the No. 2 doubles match (10-4), while the No. 3 team of Gemmel and Johnston was equally impressive (10-5).
WCHS will enter the postseason this morning when it travels to Boone for a Class 1A district meet that will also include Boone, Grundy Center, Iowa Falls-Alden, North Polk, South Hardin and Fort Dodge St. Edmond.
Each team can enter two singles players and two doubles teams at districts.
