Gilbert’s 17th goal of season not enough, WCHS girls fall
IOWA FALLS – The rust that comes from a 13-day layoff was evident on the pitch here Friday evening, as the Webster City girls’ soccer team fell behind early and could never catch up.
Iowa Falls-Alden (6-5) scores less than 4 minutes into the match and controlled possession throughout on its way to a 3-1 victory over the Lynx (4-6).
“We haven’t had a game in a long time and it showed,” WCHS head coach Paul Baedke said. “(The players) weren’t at that intensity level necessary to play with (the Cadets) physical game.”
Back-to-back rain outs left WCHS dormant since the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura tournament back on May 2.
Brittany Fopma and Aubree Gilbreth punched in first-half goals to stake IF-A to a 2-0 advantage. Fopma added another goal just over a minute into the second half to up the cushion to 3-0.
Molly Gilbert got the Lynx on the scoreboard with her 17th goal of the season with 2:36 remaining.
WCHS goalkeeper Maia Jaycox was busy throughout; she finished with 12 saves. The Lynx collected just two shots on goal at their end of the field.
The Lynx will try again this evening when they host Garner-Hayfield/Ventura at 5:30 p.m.
