Gemmel and Johnston account for Lynx only win at boys’ district tennis meet
BOONE – The Webster City boys’ tennis team wrapped up its season at a Class 1A district meet held here on Monday.
Facing a strong field that included team champion Fort Dodge St. Edmond, the Lynx won just one of five matches.
“It was a good effort by all of our players,” WCHS head coach Bruce Johnston said. “We faced some tough competition, but we played tough. It’s a great bunch of kids.”
The Lynx doubles team of Kolton Gemmel and Bryan Johnston won in the opening round over a team from North Polk 6-2, 7-6 (8-6), but then were beaten in straight sets by St. Edmond’s Halen Burke and Eric Kremer 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.
Blake Nelson and Ben Grimshaw were ousted from doubles in the opening round.
Ryan Godfredsen and Dakon Bergquist were knocked off in their singles matches. Godfredsen lost to Iowa Falls-Alden’s Caleb Smith 7-5, 6-4, while the Cadets’ Tanner Smith dispatched Bergquist 6-1, 6-3.
North Polk’s Nathan Greiner won the singles title over St. Edmond’s Ben Albright. The Gaels’ Zach Gailey and John Eide – last season’s state runner-up – won the doubles crown over Boone’s Danny Anderson and Paul Solomon.
The champions and runners-up advanced to the state meet at Byrne’s Park in Waterloo, May 29 and 30.
