BRIEFS

NO. 10 LYNX COLLECT 12TH WIN: A strong first half despite being at the mercy of the 30-plus miles per hour wind gusts propelled the 10th-ranked (Class 2A) Webster City boys’ soccer team to its 12th victory of the season on Monday in Garner.

The Lynx ripped off three goals in the match’s initial 40 minutes and were dominant throughout in a 4-1 victory over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura.

Landon Daniels notched two first-half goals on breakaways courtesy of nice assists from Seth Crouthamel and Demar Lemus.

Crouthamel poured in the opening goal of the bout off a Daniels assist.

Zane Williams put the finishing touches on the victory with a second-half goal.

WCHS (12-4) out-shot the Cardinals 22-9 and owned a 10-5 edge with shots on target. Lynx goalkeeper Ashton High collected four saves.

LIONS TOP LYNX, 8-1: Lynne Chalfant was the only Webster City player to win on Monday, as Clear Lake entered town and claimed an 8-1 girls’ tennis dual-meet victory at the WCHS courts.

Chalfant avenged an earlier loss to Lindsey Loudenburg, 8-6. WCHS won just six more games in the other five singles bouts.

The Lynx were without Courtney Lampman, who plays No. 2 singles and joins Chalfant in No. 1 doubles.

LYNX BOYS FALL: Iowa Falls-Alden won five of the six singles matches, as well as two of the three doubles bouts, to knock off Webster City, 7-2, in a boys’ tennis dual meet on Monday in Iowa Falls.

Kolton Gemmel had a solid day for the Lynx. He dominated Kade Campbell, 10-1, in the No. 4 singles match, and then teamed with Bryan Johnston to take the No. 3 doubles match, 10-5, over Campbell and Joseph Tibbs.

SWON WCHS GIRLS LEADER: A brutally tough day of golf left the Webster City girls’ team in seventh place at Monday’s North Central Conference tournament, hosted by the All Vets Club in Clear Lake.

The Lynx posted a 536. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (391) and Humboldt (391) finished first and second; the Cowgirls claimed the league crown on the fifth score tiebreaker.

Clear Lake’s Emily Snelling won the individual title with a 75.

Shannon Swon led Webster City with a 113. Brianna Westendorf (131), Leah Meyer (141) and Maddie Casady (151) also competed.

ALSAGER LEADS SH GIRLS: Sidney Alsager’s 52 led the South Hamilton girls’ golf team to a second-place finish in a triangular at the Ames Golf and Country Club on Monday.

The Hawks fired a 224. Nevada was first with a 201, Gilbert third with a 235.

Carly Swenson (54), MaKayla Cavan (59) and Amanda Austin (59) also factored into the team total.

HAWK BOYS FOURTH: The South Hamilton boys’ golf team shot a 187 and placed fourth at a five-team event on Monday at the Ames Golf and Country Club.

Host Gilbert fired a 153 to take the top spot.

Colton Coy and Sam Waid both shot rounds of 45 for the Hawks. Chase Jewell added a 48, while Nathan Sogard and Landon Quam both turned in 49s.

BRIEFS

LYNX GIRLS TENNIS TUMBLES: Already with state tournament experience under its belt, the Ballard girls’ tennis team looked like a contender against Webster City Friday at the WCHS courts.

The Bombers sailed through singles and were equally as dominant in doubles in a 9-0 dual-meet victory over Webster City.

“They were fantastic. I can definitely see them making it to the state tournament as a team,” WCHS head coach Erica Munkel said. “I was extremely proud of how (the Lynx) played. It didn’t end in our favor by any means, but the girls played hard.”

Ballard won 60 of the 69 games in singles and 30 of the 36 games in doubles.

Emily Jurgensen, Ballard’s No. 1 player and the seventh-place finisher in Class 1A at the 2014 state tournament, knocked off Lynne Chalfant, 10-4. WCHS didn’t win more than two games in any of the other five matches.

“Lynne’s singles match was fantastic,” Munkel said.

Two others players in the Bombers’ lineup, Meredith Ossian and Olivia Astarita, qualified for state last year as a doubles team. They didn’t play together on Friday.

SH GIRLS TRACK SIXTH: A victory from the distance medley relay highlighted a sixth-place finish in the team race for South Hamilton at Friday’s Ballard Invitational in Huxley.

Kali Lucas, Ady Wintermote, Allyson Ervin and Anna Moss banded together to capture the gold in 4:39.99. The Hawks won five medals in all and tallied 43 points in the Class B field.

North Polk won the meet with 127 points. Roland-Story (113) and CMB (110) followed.

South Hamilton’s 4×800 (11:09.34) – Katie Austin, Kayla Lucas, Sarah Rueger and Hannah Myers – was third.

“We’re working with a couple of different lineups between the 4×800 and the distance medley and the girls are responding,” South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said. “It’s going to give us some options going forward.”

Ervin raced to second in the 400 hurdles (1:10.85) and Ady Wintermote continued to improve in the discus; she was third with a top throw of 95 feet, 7 inches.

“I’m really pleased with Ady’s progress in the discus,” Brodie said. “That’s something we haven’t had in a very long time.”

The sprint medley (2:00.44) of Kali Lucas, Alissa Moss, Wintermote and Anna Moss was third as well.

PRUISMANN WINS GOLD FOR TROJANS: Northeast Hamilton took home three medals and a seventh-place team finish from Friday’s South Hardin Clary Invite.

The Trojans finished with 29 points. Denver (151), Iowa Falls-Alden (135) and South Hardin (1091?2) held down the top three spots.

Kyle Pruismann gave NEH its only victory. He was first to the finish in the 400-meter low hurdles in 59.55 seconds.

Nick Jeffers was a two-time medal winner. He finished second in the open 400 (54.14) and third in the discus (124 feet, 2 inches).
