No. 15 Lynx thump ’Cats, stay perfect
HUMBOLDT – Finding chinks in the armor of the Webster City boys’ soccer team is nearly impossible five matches into the season.
Monday’s 7-0 thumping of Humboldt was the latest example of the 15th-ranked (Class 2A) Lynx dominance at both ends of the pitch, as head coach Craig Signorin and his club improved to 5-0.
Coming off Saturday’s tournament championship at Hudson, it took WCHS a while to find its legs against the Wildcats, but by the time the second half rolled around it was back to business as usual.
“We were getting our legs back from the Hudson tournament and it took a little while to adapt,” Signorin said. “We possessed it well (in the first half), but we weren’t finishing as well as I know we are capable of.
“We started fast in the second half, which was exactly what I asked for.”
Ahead 2-0 at the break, WCHS rattled off three goals in the initial 10 minutes of the second half and added two more later for good measure.
Junior Brandon Young notched the first hat trick of his varsity career to go along with one assist. He scored back-to-back goals in the 43rd and 48th minutes off assists from Demar Lemus and Seth Crouthamel, and fired in a third in the 60th minute off a feed from Jerry Torres.
“Brandon is a worker. He deserves to get multiple opportunities to score, and for the most part he took advantage of them,” Signorin said. “But I now he would agree with me in saying it was the other 10 players that provided him the opportunities he was given out there (Monday night).”
Lemus found the back of the net just 40 seconds after Young’s second goal, and Dylan Peck joined in the fun with a goal in the 68th minute.
The bout was scoreless until the 12th minute when Esler Meija put WCHS in front for good courtesy of a nice feed from Crouthamel. Landon Daniels gave the Lynx the 2-0 cushion in the 19th minute off Young’s assist.
WCHS outshot Humboldt (0-3) 34-2, including 19-2 on goal. All-state goalkeeper Ashton High had an uneventful night with just two saves.
As good as the Lynx offense has been – they’ve outscored their five opponents by 18 goals – it could be argued that the defense has been even more dominant. High and his backline mates have allowed just one goal, including none over the last 284 minutes, 57 seconds of match time, which calculates to a smidgen under 41?2 hours.
WCHS will look for victory No. 6 on Friday when it makes the 30-minute trek east to take on Iowa Falls-Alden at Cadet Field in Iowa Falls at 5:30 p.m.
JV also wins
The Webster City junior varsity squad also came up victorious over Humboldt, 2-1, on Monday.
A nice corner kick by Alex Bobadilla set up Tyler Bultena for the first Lynx goal. Ehud Ortiz also reached the scoring column off a pass from Dylan Peck.
