It came to me about a year ago. My brother and I were talking on the phone and I mentioned the phrase, which we both immediately agreed would make a good bumper sticker or something. That Christmas, a daughter-in-law of mine surprised me with two T-shirts that had the expression printed on them; one for me and the second for my brother.
Not that everything is more difficult as we age. As one who travels quite a bit, I was actually disappointed when the airport TSA agent told me I wouldn't have to remove my shoes as I was "obviously old enough"... and I even wear Sketchers simply because I can't reach my feet anymore.
Remember when a computer password could be used, over and over, for all of the programs you'd use... then we had to come up with a bunch of different ones... now we're supposed to trust the same computer you need a password for to create obscenely long ones no one could ever guess? Oh, and a link texted to you to enter a number so the computer "knows" it's you? For me "Password" was one of my favorite TV game shows.
Now when I have a question about my phone (which is, actually, the least used part of most people's cell devices), I have to ask my 11-year-old granddaughter to help me. Luckily, she's a genius... or I'm just "getting old". Finding your phone when it's "misplaced" is so much a bother, I long for one with a cord attached to the wall so I could never lose it! Of course, when it is misplaced, you need another person to call it... or, in my case, use Apple's "Find My Phone" feature; except that also takes another phone. Really?
Years ago, my grandparents had a color TV; the first one in the neighborhood. It was truly amazing to watch Disney's "Wonderful World of Color" on it. I figured no one else could. And they even had a remote... me. "Michael, go turn up the volume." "Michael, it's too loud, get up and go turn it down." So simple... Now it takes thinking hard to figure out how to watch Ed Wilson tell me what the weather might be tomorrow... is it on channel 13 or 13.4 (wherever the heck that is) or Who13.com or... I guess you could just ask Alexa... but don't get me started. I really, really miss the amazing weather rock we had in our backyard. If it was wet, it was raining... white, snowing... missing, really windy. Much, much easier.
Even popping popcorn can be a challenge these days. I'm supposed to figure out the volume of popcorn, how powerful my microwave is and you still have to stand there watching... or your smoke detector will tell you when the time's up.
Well, I've rambled enough complaining about growing older. I'll just go ask my car to take me to Kwik Star for an ice cream... if I can find the little doo-dad that's called a fob.
