Finding gratitude in every season
Living in rural Iowa teaches us a lot about seasons.
We watch the fields turn from brown to green, then green to gold. We celebrate the rain when it’s needed and pray for it when it doesn’t come. We know what it’s like to endure long winters, muddy springs, hot summers, and busy harvests. Life has a way of reminding us that every season eventually changes.
The same is true in our personal lives.
Some seasons are filled with joy–weddings, new babies, family gatherings, good health, and answered prayers. Other seasons feel much harder. We may be carrying the weight of a strained relationship, financial stress, grief, illness, loneliness, or simply the exhaustion that comes from trying to keep up with the demands of daily life.
Yet one truth remains the same: God is worthy of our praise in every season.
One of my favorite Bible verses hangs on the wall in our bedroom. It is a simple reminder I see every day:
“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” — Romans 12:12
Some mornings those words are easy to live out. Other days they are much harder.
But gratitude is not something we practice only when life is going well. Gratitude is a choice we make when life is difficult too.
I’ve learned that one of the quickest ways to change my perspective is to intentionally thank God for the blessings right in front of me. Not the big things everyone notices–but the ordinary things we often take for granted.
The sunrise over an Iowa field.
The laughter of children.
A text message from a friend.
A meal around the table.
A church family that prays.
The ability to get out of bed and start another day.
The breath in our lungs.
These simple gifts remind us that God is still working, even when life feels uncertain.
One practical way to grow gratitude is to start each morning by thanking God for three things before your feet hit the floor. They don’t have to be profound. Some days it may simply be a warm cup of coffee, a roof over your head, and another day to serve Him. Other days it may be an answered prayer, a restored relationship, or strength to face a challenge.
Another helpful habit is ending the day by asking, “Where did I see God’s faithfulness today?” When we look for His fingerprints throughout the day, we often discover He was present in far more places than we realized.
As Christians, our gratitude goes far beyond life’s blessings. Our greatest reason for thankfulness is Jesus Christ.
The Bible tells us that every one of us has sinned. We have all fallen short of God’s perfect standard. Sin separates us from God, and there is nothing we can do on our own to bridge that gap.
But God loved us too much to leave us there.
Jesus Christ came to earth, lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again three days later. Through His sacrifice, forgiveness and eternal life are available to all who place their faith in Him.
The Gospel calls us not only to believe but to repent–to turn from our sin and turn toward Christ. Repentance means surrendering our lives to Him, trusting His ways over our own, and following Him daily.
When we truly understand the grace we’ve been given, gratitude becomes more than a feeling. It becomes a way of life.
No matter what season you find yourself in today, I encourage you to pause and thank God. Thank Him for His faithfulness in the past. Thank Him for His presence today. Thank Him for the promise that He will never leave His children.
The same God who carried you yesterday is carrying you today.
And He will carry you tomorrow.
Whether you are walking through a season of abundance or a season of struggle, may your heart be filled with gratitude, your eyes fixed on Jesus, and your life overflowing with praise to the One who alone deserves all glory, honor, and worship.
May we be a people who choose thankfulness–not because life is perfect, but because God is faithful.
