There is no doubt in my mind that we need a new and renovated high school.
Before the bond was passed to build a new middle school, I was on the Middle School Building committee (KIDS). There were over 22 of us, nonselected, but volunteered to be on the committee. This committee consisted of people from various service clubs, middle school tutor volunteers, teachers and parents of middle students. We were under the direction of Superintendent Dennis Bahr and George Caggiano, Middle School principal. Our main goal was what was best for the kids, educational wise, handicapped accessible, security, etc. We listened to various architects to see if we would build or renovate. We took over a year to do this. Along with this a teacher from each team (5th-8th) and a tech person would visit various middle schools for ideas. The public was kept informed. Once the bond passed the committee was narrowed down.
Many have attended the meetings at the High School and many people are confused. The Freeman Journal's editorial summed it up best: So many questions unanswered and why is this being rushed?
The focus should be on education. A community center is not needed and should not be considered. The competition gym is not a shrine and needs to be used for classes.
I hope the school board truly takes their time in the decisions they need to make in the future for the High School.
