Slow Down
Letter to the editor,
Ever think things are moving too fast? Is AI being used to cure cancer and many other problems?
I know it is used to sell stuff. Always about making a buck. If kids have their heads buried in their phones, why are school scores going down?
Is the space race because they know we are killing this planet because of pollution and ignoring climate change?
They are shoving data centers down our throats while the hype is alive and before companies quit because of cost. Everything connected to the Internet uses a data center. They are the physical infrastructure that acts as a secure, climate controlled warehouse for thousands of servers and network equipment. They store massive amounts of digital info, process data for applicants and deliver to users.
There's an AI race to become the next Google. It's basically a scheme to collect more money, ramp up surveillance, create AI dependency and data retention.
They build in rural areas because land is cheaper and I guess they think they can grab our electricity and weather before we notice.
We need to study impacts before we get in too deep.
Construction of a center creates a lot of temporary jobs but not that many permanent.
Landlords may raise the rent for the emps but what happens when they are gone? Are we stuck with a high rent town?
Will contracts or regulation make sure the center pays their share of water and electricity always?
Will they connect to our water or dig?
Can our water plant handle it?
Are we going for the quick buck or will we think of the future for our kids and all young people?
