Bleeding Disorder Awareness month in March encourages more knowledge about disorder

To the editor,

March is Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month. Across the country and right here in Iowa, patients and families are raising awareness about rare inherited bleeding disorders that affect thousands of Americans.

Bleeding disorders occur when blood does not clot properly. Conditions like hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, rare platelet disorders and factor deficiencies can turn everyday injuries into serious medical events. Something as simple as a fall, dental work or surgery can lead to days of pain, swelling or long term joint damage. Managing these lifelong conditions is not only physically challenging, but often financially and emotionally difficult as well.

As an Iowa resident affected by a bleeding disorder, I know how important education, support and access to care are for families like mine. No one should feel alone while navigating a rare condition.

I encourage our community to learn more, share information and support families living with bleeding disorders. Together we can improve awareness, advocate for accessible care and build stronger networks.

Thank you for helping start this important conversation.

Sincerely,
