Let’s come together for something special

To the editor:

For too long, we have been defined by who we voted for in the last election. We have been defined by our opinion of wearing masks or whether we think vaccines are effective. Politics and public health are essential facets of everyday life. However, I see community as more important. Upon the news that Webster City will once again be a pass-through town in the 48th edition of RAGBRAI, I saw a perfect opportunity for Webster City to come together as a community.

Two of my father, Kent Harfst’s passions were community and bikes. Our community was fortunate enough to have my dad’s leadership in past RAGBRAIs. He worked very hard, alongside many others, to showcase what Webster City had to offer. I enjoyed seeing his work up close back in 2012 when we hosted as an overnight town. He was so proud of how well we came together to roll out the red carpet for some 20,000 cyclists, especially in wicked heat.

I know many throughout our community miss my dad. We are all still grieving his loss. I can’t think of anything better to honor his memory than hosting a great day in July. I will do whatever I can to help make it a great day.

I plan to ride from Fort Dodge to Iowa Falls, and I know he will be right beside me.
