Kiwanis Club offers thanks for support for Kids Against Hunger

To the Editor:

In the year 2005 the Main Street, USA Morning Kiwanis Club board of directors voted to make a five year commitment to setting up and running a Kids-Against-Hunger food packaging satellite in Webster City with the proviso that there was enough interest in the local community to maintain such a program. With positive reinforcement from local media, most especially a strong editorial recommendation from then Freeman Journal editor Lori Nilles, the community opened their collective purse strings while groups of packaging volunteers seemingly came from everywhere. The response has been absolutely heartwarming. At the end of the five years, because of the it’s success the Kiwanis board voted to extend the program for a year, and then another year and then — until here we are at the end of our twelfth year.

However, although the local community has continued to very generously fund the program, volunteerism has diminished considerably while at the same time other entities in the community have chosen to do Kids-Against-Hunger packagings of their own, independent of our Kiwanis Club, which, of course, we strongly encourage. And so, because of this trend, Main Street Morning Kiwanis has opted to terminate our Kids-Against-Hunger food packaging program. However, we remain willing and able to advise any local group that would like to do a packaging event.

Since our club no longer has a food packaging program, we ask community members to refrain from donating to it unless you think (and rightly so) the umbrella organization under which we operated, The Outreach Program in Union, Iowa is a charitable organization to which you would like to continue to donate. If that be the case, our Kiwanis Club would be happy to funnel your donations to the proper place.

Words cannot begin to express the gratitude that we feel toward our generous and caring community for the support that we have receive these past twelve years. It has been a great ride. Thank you.
