To the Editor:

Flying the Confederate flag in his Congressional office clearly shows that Iowa’s 4th District U.S. Representative Steve King believes that any state should be allowed to secede from the United States.

The 1919 edition of the World Book Encyclopedia states, “War of Secession, a conflict between a divided people in the American republic, growing out of the institution of slavery In 1865, it was terminated by the defeat of the side which had risen in defense of slavery There were 360,000 casualties in the Union forces”

Rep. King shows no respect for the gallant Iowans who fought in the War of Secession, later known as the Civil War. Iowans shed blood and tears to protect our country from division. Their deaths were not in vain. In fact, we have increased the number of states who fly the U.S. flag since 1865.

Who Iowans elect to Congress reflects our values. For after all, it is the voters who decide.
