Urges people to keep an eye on older neighbors

To the Editor:

On June 15, World Elder Abuse Awareness Day reminds us that older Iowans are abused and financially exploited on a daily basis. Living in isolation contributes to older adult’s vulnerability. Ninety percent of adults age 65 and older say they hope to stay in their homes for as long as possible. Abuse and financial exploitation destroys dreams.

During this week, I encourage everyone to check on your older neighbors. If you have any concerns or questions, call your Area Agency on Aging (AAA) office through Lifelong Links: 866-468-7887. This number will connect you to the Elder Rights Specialist in your area.

Your Area Agency on Aging office can also connect you to Information and Assistance staff for information on local services for older adults; benefits and local programs; and family caregiver support programs.

Check on neighbors, offer to call occasionally and call your AAA office if you have questions.
