When Iowans go to the polls next month, they have a chance to show their support for a superb secretary of agriculture. Mike Naig was appointed on March 5 by Gov. Kim Reynolds to succeed Bill Northey, when that outstanding predecessor became an undersecretary in the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Naig has proved to be an outstanding choice to lead the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. His five years as deputy secretary resulted in a seamless transition of leadership at IDALS and the continuation of the key initiatives Northey launched.

Of particular importance has been Naig’s strong commitment to protecting and enhancing our state’s water resources. Naig is committed to continuing the public-private partnerships the governor and IDALS have championed to conserve our precious natural resources.

Naig is just about as steeped in Iowa farm life as would be humanly possible. He grew up on his family’s farm in near Cylinder. He still plays a role in its operation today. Naig also was active in the agribusiness industry for more than a dozen years before joining the IDALS team. He had public policy roles for state and national trade associations and worked in private industry. That diverse background gave him the broad perspective crucial for anyone who heads IDALS.

Like his predecessor, Naig fully understands that exports are important to keeping Iowa’s rural economy vibrant. He is working hard both to sell Iowa products and learn how the state can best compete in a rapidly changing world economy.

Today, virtually every office seeker in Iowa touts the importance of ethanol and other biofuels to the state’s economic resurgence. Naig is no exception. He a strong advocate of ethanol and other biofuels. That’s especially important because ethanol production is a major contributor to our local economy.

Iowa’s secretary of agriculture plays a key part in helping Iowans evolve an agricultural strategy to keep the Hawkeye State’s rural economy the envy of the world. Naig understands and is well-qualified to help further that mission.

Naig is working hard to stay in touch with Iowans. He is committed to visiting each county at least once each year. He understands that it is vital to listen carefully to what voters have to say.
