Ben was born on January 14, 1986, in Story City, Iowa, to Randy and Sally (Rigter) Greenfield. He attended Northeast Hamilton Community Schools from kindergarten through high school, graduating with the Class of 2004. During high school, Ben enjoyed playing football, “running” track, baseball, and was active in FFA, band, 4-H, and his church youth group. Some of his best memories were simply spending time with his friends. He married Andrea Roberts on June 24, 2014, in Las Vegas; the couple later divorced.
In 2006, Ben earned degrees in Agriculture and Swine Management from Ellsworth Community College. He worked in the swine industry in central Iowa for nearly 20 years. Ben took great pride in living on the family farm, where he raised chickens, two calves, two hogs, two sheep, and nine ducks. He loved sharing pictures and videos of his animals on Snapchat and spent many hours watching YouTube videos about farm life. Ben was also proud to have overcome a long battle with alcoholism, celebrating two years of sobriety. He had a dynamic and charismatic personality that drew you in, he knew how to work any room he walked into while being 100% authentically himself.
Ben’s family includes his mother Sally; brothers: Dan (Jessica) of Story City, and David (Brittany) of Ames; Four nephews: Wyatt, Waylon, Kasen, and Kylen; one niece Kenzlee; aunts and uncles: Sandra Swanson, Terry Doyle, Sandy Rigter, Rhonda & Mark Fiscus, Lisa & Tim Robson, Jim & Phyllis Greenfield, and Troy & Tammy Greenfield; 18 cousins; his friend Andrea Roberts; step son Hunter Riordan and 100’s of friends. He was preceded in death by his father Randy; aunt Susan Doyle; uncles: Larry Swanson and John Rigter; and grandparents Roy & Bonnie Greenfield and Raymond & Orpha Rigter.
The family is deeply grateful for the love and support they’ve received, as well as the care and kindness shown to Ben over the years.
