Dennis (Denny) Joseph Amman, 81, of Fort Dodge passed away March 23rd at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s and more recently cancer.

Denny was born May 19, 1942, in Iowa Falls, Iowa, to Harold and Nona (Allen) Amman. As an active Boy Scout, Denny was one of 52,000 scouts that attended the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Valley Forge, New York in 1957. While still in high school, Denny joined the Naval Reserve Unit in Mason City. After graduating from Iowa Falls High School in 1960, he attended Ellsworth Junior College for one year before going active in the U.S. Navy. After boot camp, Denny was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Saint Paul which was home ported in Yokosuka, Japan. After his discharge in 1963, Denny attended the Institute of Medical Technology in Minneapolis where he met his future wife, Karen Cuckie in January of 1964.

Before their marriage on January 9, 1965, at the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Dodge, Denny had the opportunity to join Karen’s father in his expanded farm operation. The couple farmed in the Duncombe area for 43 years before retiring to Fort Dodge.

The couple had two children, Scott and Molly. Denny was active in Webster County 4-H as a club leader, Hi 4-H leader, Webster County 4-H Foundation Board and helping with the livestock computer work at the county fair. Denny also served on the Webster County Farm Bureau Board, Webster County Extension Council, NEW Cooperative Board of Directors and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Fort Dodge.

Denny had many interests and loved to “tinker,” which led to many ventures; building a small tractor to run the grain augers; working on computers (his own and the many friends who need help); repairing clocks (particularly antique clocks). Denny restored many of the antique clocks at the Smeltzer House. He also was a talented woodworker, building bedroom furniture and tall clocks for family and friends. His father was killed when the airplane he was flying crashed so Denny got his pilot’s license to prove that flying a private airplane was safe. Denny was most proud of his family, being a farmer and his service to his country in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Karen; son Scott Amman and his wife Bess Worley and their children Clara and Joey of Williamsburg, Virginia; daughter Molly and her husband Neil O’Hare and their son NJ of West Des Moines; and sister-in-law Ann (Cuckie) Raschka and her husband Joe of Blaine, Minnesota; and two nephews, Jeff Raschka (Jessica) and their children, Kaleigh, Courtney, Amelia, Ethan, Corbin and Jaxson of Hatley, Wisconsin, and Chad Raschka (Sarah) and their family Zoey and Ramona of New Brighton, Minnesota; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather Lavern Pommrehn; grandparents Peter and Josephine (Meyer) Amman and Roy and Carrie (Borton) Allen; father and mother-in-law Athol and Doris Cuckie; aunts, uncles and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church, Webster County 4-H Foundation, Alzheimer’s Association, or American Cancer Society.
