Lucille Baker

Mrs. Mary “Lucille” Baker (nee Wehrheim) passed away surrounded by her family in Portland, Oregon, on Nov. 16, 2023, at the age of 102.

Lucille is survived by her children, Barbara Langley (William) and Marsha Baker (James Miller), her granddaughter, Elizabeth Baker and nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dwight V. Baker, her parents, her sister and two brothers.

Lucille was born on April 19, 1921, to Valentine H. Wehrheim and Martha (McDonald) Wehrheim in Webster City, Iowa. She greatly enjoyed growing up in Webster City with her three siblings, Virginia, Melvin and Eugene. Lucille graduated from Webster City’s Lincoln High School in 1939, and then attended junior college. In 1940, she married the love of her life, Dwight V. Baker. After WW II, Lucille and Dwight settled in Washington, Iowa, where they raised their two daughters until Dwight’s passing in 1962. Lucille and her daughters then moved back to her hometown of Webster City to be near her family.

After her daughters completed high school and left home, Lucille moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she served for many years as a loan officer at the First National Bank of Minneapolis. In the late 1970s, she returned to Webster City to care for her aging mother. Lucille’s devotion to her parents, daughters and granddaughter defined most of her life. When her mother passed, Lucille joined her daughter, Marsha, to help raise her granddaughter. In later years, Lucille moved and made her home in Portland, Oregon, near her daughter, Barbara and husband.

Throughout her life in Webster City, Iowa, Lucille was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, located at 1000 Des Moines St., Webster City, IA, where she was baptized, confirmed, and married. Bringing her spiritual life full circle, Lucille will come home once again to Webster City, and her funeral will be held at St. Thomas on Thursday, November 30. Visitation will be at the church starting at 9:30 AM and funeral service at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Foster Funeral and Cremation Center is entrusted with the services.
