Bernie DaWayne Fortune, 86, passed away May 12, 2018, at his home in Story City where he had lived since 2014.

DaWayne was born September 16, 1931, to Bernie William and Beatrice Elzina (Lee) Fortune on a farm north of Stanhope. He married LoRena Maxine Rhoad April 27, 1952, at Homer Methodist Church. The couple farmed south of Homer until the spring of 1964, at which time they moved to a farm south of Stanhope where they resided for 50 years.

DaWayne is survived by his wife, Maxine; children Rita Sogard (Brian) of Woodland, CA; Wanda Olson of Ellsworth and Wade Fortune (Tricia) of Ames; grandchildren Shawn Sogard (Faye) of Lincoln, CA; Clint Olson of Naples, FL; Danielle Olson Lee (Nick) of Clive and Lucas Olson of Ellsworth; and great-granddaughters Olivia and Victoria Sogard of Lincoln, CA.

Preceding him in death were his sister, Esther Iles, and his brother-in-law, Harold Iles.

In addition to being a lifelong farmer, DaWayne worked at Stratford Implement for 18 years. After retirement, he delivered Winnebago Motor Homes to 49 states and several provinces in Canada. His routes took him from Key West to San Diego and from Anchorage to Nova Scotia, Canada.

DaWayne enjoyed traveling and the beauty of Mother Nature, especially in Colorado. He also had a passion for cars, particularly his 1959 white Cadillac convertible.
