Judge rules in favor of young folks

Judge Fry directed a verdict for the defense at the morning session at which trial A. Habhab, a dry goods merchant of Fort Dodge, tried to have the marriage of his daughter Adebeah to Francis Rank, set aside.

It was just a year ago last Sept. 10 that the young couple accompanied by Fay Swanson, all of Fort Dodge, came to this city to get married. Miss Swanson was attired in men's clothing and when she signed her name as a witness to the marriage license application she wrote "Bill Spiffence."

After obtaining the license, the young people went to Justice of Peace Charles Harris and were married.

The young wife's father soon learned of the marriage and came to this city and lodged a complaint saying that his daughter was not of age at the time of her marriage and that the license had been obtained through conspiracy of the couple and Miss Swanson.

In due course of time, Miss Swanson, alias Bill Spiffence was indicted on a charge of conspiracy.

Mr. Habhab is an Assyrian, quick tongued and fiery of temper. When asked whether he was an American citizen, he repeatedly said he was, but on further questioning admitted he was not, but will get my final papers Nov. 10.

Upon completion of Mr. Habhab's time on the stand, the defense submitted a motion to the court that he direct a verdict in favor of the defendant and permit the marriage vows between Mr. and Mrs. Francis Rank remain as they are. The court agreed and commended the young couple, saying that the father was not without fault in the case.

New 'Meals on wheels' project moving ahead

Webster City's newest community supported project, the "Meals on Wheels Service" has moved forward at a rapid pace this week following a meeting held at Trinity Lutheran church, where civic and church leaders, YOUR, Inc. representatives, the county health nurse, board of supervisors, hospital administrators and other concerned individuals met together for their third organization meeting.

In an effort to get the team rolling, it was decided that an organizational board of directors must be set up with officers and committees to determine the needs, procedures and support required to get the program in operation by Jan. 1 if possible.

Reverend Raymond Roden accepted the responsibility to act as coordinator for the program in the initial phase, at the unanimous request of the group. Also elected as officers were Gary Edwards as co-chairman, Mrs. Ellis Swon, secretary and Mrs. Cleve Hewitt, treasurer.

City takes on energy, drainage projects

From improving services to west side businesses and industries, to planting a new look around city hall, Webster City City Councilmen struck a building theme during Monday's meeting.

One of the biggest came in the category of "Rebuild America," translated into a state program known as "Rebuild Iowa," intended to help rebuild Webster City.

A frequent visitor to council meetings, Kelly Needles, president of The Energy Group, Des Moines, outlined the program for councilmen. Webster City is one of only five Iowa communities selected for participation in the program. The grant application was prepared by Needles and City Manager Teresa Rotschafer earlier this year and approved by the state a few weeks ago. Under the program, Webster City will receive a one-year, $30,000 renewable grant to carry out energy efficiency programs in the community.
