Hallowe'en Dances are given at Outing club and by the Mooseheart Legion

The Halloween season furnished the occasion last evening for two dancing parties. There were about eighty who attended the annual Hallowe'en dance at the Outing club, while the Women of Mooseheart Legion were hostesses to about 150 in the Moose hall.

Eppel's orchestra furnished a good program of music for the dancing at the Outing club. The club house was attractively decorated for the occasion with streamers of black and or orange and shocks of corn and pumpkins in the corners. The fireplace was banked with autumn leaves with pumpkins on the mantle and at either side.

During intermission, a light lunch was served. Mr. and Mrs. Verne L. Clifton, who were chairmen for the evening were assisted by Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Jones, Mr. and Mrs. George Alexander and Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Johnson

Moose have Masquerade

Each guest at the Moose dance came in masquerade and three ghosts, who were Mrs. George Yaus, Mrs. Roe Stuart and Mrs. S. Wilson Helmick, served as judges to determine who should be awarded prizes. These judges gave first prizes to Mrs. C.W. Miller and Monroe Ringer and second prize to Mrs. Murray Simpson and James McDonald.

The mystery surrounding entertainment for the two mass Halloween parties to be held here Thursday night for all school kids lifted a bit today with the announcement that two expert fortune tellers will be on duty.

The nature of races, games , contests and eats still was not being revealed by the Rev. H.C. Coovert and the Rev. W.C. Abbe.

The two giant masquerades are being sponsored by the Webster City Ministerial association and Leisure Lodge, local youth center. Children from Kindergarten through the sixth grade will meet at 7 p.m. at the old school gymnasium.

$150,000 fire destroys former ACA building

Firemen from six communities waged a five-hour battle Thursday afternoon and evening against a stubborn fire which finally gutted the former headquarters building of the American Chiropractic association in Webster City's business district.

Loss was estimated at around $150,000 to the two-story, triple front building which was vacated about two years ago when the ACA moved to Des Moines.

Two couples residing in apartments on the second floor lost all their possessions. They were Mr. and Mrs. Ted Dunn and Mr. and Mrs. Alan Van Kley. The latter also reported that the young family dog had been lost in the fire.

Briggs Woods bridge collapses

A truck, heavily laden with gravel intended to be spread by park personnel on roads in Briggs Woods park, proved too heavy for the old bridge at the park yesterday afternoon and the bridge "came a tumblin' down."

According to Bryan Holt, executive director of the Hamilton County Conservation Commission, Bob Ades, park officer for Little Wall Lake, was driving the rented truck across the bridge when it collapsed, wrecking the structure completely. Ades, formerly of this city, was not injured. The truck had been rented from the Jerry Johnson Excavation Co., in Jewell.

Singers share vocal talents

A relatively new arts group is giving adults an opportunity to use their vocal abilities for more than just talking.

The Webster City Community Chorus has been in existence for nearly a year, having been organized in January. The group was established after a large number of area residents gathered to perform Handel's "Messiah".

"We first thought of organizing the chorus when we saw how many interested people there were," according to the group's director, Don Anderson.

The candidates for Webster City City Manager: Who will it be?

A grueling two days of interviews this weekend failed to produce a final decision by the Webster City city council on who will be the next city manager. The council is now back in the process of conducting background checks and likely has a first choice in mind.

The candidates are Acting City Manager Teresa Rotschafer, Joseph Salitros of Wayne, Nebraska and Brian Wagner of Lakefield, Minnesota.
