Annual Cornhusking Tilt is handicapped by poor stand of corn

Archie Amundson of Radcliffe, today won the Hamilton county cornhusking contest when he nosed out Roy Wilson, Webster City, by a margin of 13.4 pounds net. An oddity in connection with the derby winners this year is that last year Amundson was second and Wilson third. Thus each moved up a notch.

It is expected that Amundson will participate in the state contest Nov. 10 to be held near Newhall.

Amundson husked a net of 1,497.6 pounds to win, whereas last year it took 1,750.2 net to give him second place. Corn this year, however is harder to husk and generally smaller, with many nubbins, which made the gleanings run unusually high. Wilson's net poundage today was 1,484.2.

School library service on wheels

Two of Webster City's veteran teachers, Miss Georgia Lane and Miss Ada Bell, both first grade instructors at South building were among the many teachers in and near Webster City who took advantage yesterday of a new library service for instructors.

Beginning Sept. 1, this new bookmobile, modern and efficient in design, started serving the schools and libraries of Iowa and carrying a big collection of books which had been carefully evaluated by the ISEA's library service, formerly called the Iowa Pupil's Reading circle. Since September, 1926 this reading service has been offered to Iowa teachers, first listing only 59 titles. Twenty-five years later, the service lists nearly 1,800 titles.

County cust assistance for social services

At Tuesday morning's supervisor meeting, Sharon Perry, director of Social Services, came with a a request for a revision to the guidelines for Hamilton County Social Services Emergency Assistance.

Perry requested the assistance limitations be lowered. She recommended medical assistance be lowered from $1,000 per family to $750 on assistance for rent, clothing, utilities and food not to exceed $500 for a single adult or $750 for a family, a reduction in both by $250.

"I know this will be difficult on the people of Hamilton County that need assistance, but if we don't do this, we will run out of money before the end of the year," said Perry. "According to the code of Iowa, we have to provide assistance to the poor and needy," Perry said, adding it was an unfunded mandate. "I do it regretfully," she said, but had to make the money stretch.

The request was unanimously approved.
