Episcopal church to observe 25th anniversary Saturday and Sunday

The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd of Webster City will be observing its 25th anniversary of its church building Saturday and Sunday with former pastors, Father Bob Wichael of Ottumwa and Father Robert Holzhammer of Iowa City to be among the featured celebrants of the Eucharist.

The Church of the Good Shepherd traces its beginning back to the early 1920's when a priest from Fort Dodge would come regularly to administer the sacraments to several Webster City residents. These Episcopalians included Mrs. Varick Crosley, Max and Grace Hemingway and Guyon and Mary Whitley.

In the summer of 1951, a pre-seminary student, now the Rev. Kent Pinneo, came to Webster City to contact those inclined to the Episcopal church. The small group he contacted held services in their homes with the first service conducted by Kent Pinneo on Aug. 19 that year. A service of evening prayer was held at the Universalist church Oct. 7 with two lay leaders from Ames, Al Husson and Clive Goring, leading the service. The group decided to rent the Jane Young House and held their first service there Oct. 21.
