Dinner to open Civic Music drive tonight
With a dinner at 6:15 p.m. at the Elks club tonight, serving as the opening event, the annual membership campaign of the North Central Civic Music association is aiming at a record enrollment, it was announced today.
In addition to launching an opening of membership week, the dinner will give workers an opportunity to receive their supplies and instructions for the intensive drive which will close Saturday Oct. 13.
The Kiwanis club will unite with the association members at the dinner. Joe Buell, president of the association, has announced Lloyd Karr as the speaker of the evening and Miss Mattert, Civic Concert representative here to assist in the work, will instruct the workers and outline the plans for the week.
"Annually," Miss Olive Bateman, secretary, explained today, "one week is set aside for receiving memberships for the next season. Civic Music is a non-profit cooperative setup operating on a budget which is determined at the close of the drive. The small sum needed for operative expenses such as auditorium rent, pianos, postage and other incidentals is deducted from the membership fund and the remaining is used for the concerts."
"Since the association must know at the time of selecting its series, the amount of money available for that use, it must secure its membership first, and set aside one week for this purpose. For that reason, it does not offer memberships at any other time in the year. For the same reason, it does not offer single admissions. Only Civic Music members may attend these concerts."
