1951

Movie Stars to be here in person

A movietime caravan in which screen star MacDonald Carey and Radio Singer Benay Venuta will visit Webster City next Thursday as part of a statewide tour of Iowa, it was announced today.

Carey, a former Sioux City resident, is among several Hollywood actors who will take part in the caravan which is planned to visit many Iowa communities to promote the motion [picture business.

The caravan will open in Des Moines Monday with a parade and governor's luncheon. The group then will split into three tours to visit the various sections of the state.

The No. 1 group of Carey, Miss Venuta and Richard Malbaum, a new young actor, will visit Webster City on Thursday, in addition to Iowa Falls, Eldora, Hampton and Mason City.

On Saturday, Carey will make an appearance at the Iowa-Pittsburgh football game.

Plaque dedication set at Bonebright park Wednesday

A service to which the general public is invited will be held next Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Bonebright Park where the plaque recently placed by the Daughters of American Colonists (DAC) on a boulder at the Wilson Brewer family burial site will be officially dedicated.

Mrs. Frank Talcott, regent of the local DAC chapter said the service at the park will be held following a luncheon for DAC members starting at 12:30 p.m. at Hotel Willson.

Wilson Brewer, first white settler in the Webster City area, was the founder of Newcastle which later became Webster City.

1971

Big turn-out for picnic mixer

Approximately 30 boots and nearly the same number of men enjoyed a special get acquainted picnic-mixer held last evening at Briggs Woods park under the sponsorship of the Big Brother organization.

Brighton Eddy, chairman of the Big Brothers, welcomed the boys when they arrived and challenged them to a softball contest with the men. The boys defeated the adults by 17-5. Another group of boys was led on a hike by Ronald Craig, executive officer of the Hamilton County Conservation board.

Members of the Webster City Jaycees with Mike Stoessel acting as chairman for the picnic arrangements prepared hot dogs which were served to the boys and adults.

1976

Kiwanians install new presidents

Jerry White was installed as the new president of the Noon Kiwanis club and Doug Meline was installed as president of the Kiwanis Club of Main St., U.S. A. by Lt. Gov. Charles Valley as a highlight of the combined Kiwanis installation ceremonies held last evening at Christopher Jay's with about 100 persons in attendance.

The Rev. Alva Hohl, Jr. gave the invocation and the group sang "America" and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Kermit Doolittle served as master of ceremonies for the informal program. The high school swing choir, directed by Erwin Christianson, presented special music.

Ken Harfst, past president of the noon Kiwanis club and Keith Bahrenfuss of the Main St. club were presented with past president's pins by Charles Valley, recently installed here as the new lieutenant-governor for this district.

Delta Kappa Gamma initiates members

Members of Alpha Ki chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, honorary society for women educators, met at the Church of the Good Shepherd for an initiation service and dinner Monday evening.

Marian Stuart, sixth grade teacher at Sunset Heights and LuVerne Iverson, elementary teacher in the Randall center of South Hamilton schools were initiates.

Dorothy Donahue, Maryanna Hubbard, Lois Carlson and Lucille Dress were the initiating officers with Mary Margaret Mourlam serving as initiation chairman. Eleanor Greiner and Lois Voss served as escorts to the initiates.

2006

Britsons take top honors in country club tourney

The annual Mother/Son-Father/Daughter Golf tournament was held Sunday, Oct. 1 at the Webster City Country club.

The overall champions were Peggy and Bruce Britson with a score of 39, they were also the first place winners in the Mother/Son division.

Second place went to Judy and Mitch Peterson with a 46, third place went to Jennie and Jason Ihle with a 49 and fourth place was won by Joan and Rod Olson with a 56. The Mother/Son adopted division winners were Peggy and Mike Britson with a 47. Peggy and Chad Britson took second place with a 48, third place went to Candy Rector and Scott Peterson with a 50 and fourth place went to Kay Ross and Cody Johnson with a score of 62.

Winners of the Father/Daughter division were Larry and Katie Ross with a 40 while second place went to Larry and Molly Ross with a 41, third place was won by ZJim and Taylor Bryan with a 43 and Jim and Gracie Bryan won fourth place with a 49. In the Father/Daughter adopted division, the winners were Rick Ihle and Cassie Ihle with a score of 49 while Ray Wilson and Katie Coleman took second place. The Sportsmanship award was also awarded to Ray Wilson and Katie Coleman.
