What happens when two women with very different backgrounds become roommates? Audiences will find out when Webster City Community Theatre presents “The Roommate,” a witty, surprising and thought-provoking comedy by acclaimed playwright Jen Silverman on Nov. 5-8.

Tickets for the production are on sale now and may be purchased online at wccommtheatre.ludus.com.

Set in rural Iowa, “The Roommate” introduces Sharon, a recently divorced woman whose quiet life is turned upside down when she rents a room in her home to Robyn, a mysterious and free-spirited New Yorker looking for a fresh start. What begins as an unlikely friendship soon becomes a journey of self-discovery, reinvention and unexpected possibilities.

As secrets are revealed and boundaries are tested, the two women discover that it’s never too late to shake things up--or become someone entirely new.

The two-woman production features Leah Mason as Sharon and Amelia Oliver as Robyn, under the direction of Anne Blankenship.

With its sharp dialogue, laugh-out-loud moments and unexpected twists, the play explores friendship, identity and the courage it takes to embrace change.

The play enjoyed a Broadway run in 2024, starring Patti LuPone and Mia Farrow, bringing national attention to Silverman’s clever and unconventional story about two women navigating life’s second acts.

"’The Roommate’ reminds us that we don’t have to be defined by our past or the expectations others place on us," said Blankenship. "It’s funny, a little outrageous and ultimately a story about the possibilities that open up when we’re willing to take a chance."

Performances are scheduled for Nov. 5 and 6 at 7 p.m., and Nov. 7 and 8 at 2 p.m. at Webster City Community Theatre.

Whether you’re planning a night out with your best friend, significant other, book club or even your own roommate, “The Roommate” promises an entertaining evening filled with laughter and a few surprises.
