New shelter house for West Twin Park
Construction of a 24 x 32 foot shelter house at Twin Parks got underway this morning. This shelter house, which will be constructed of wood with a cement floor will be used for picnics during the summer and will provide storage room for park tables an equipment during the winter.
The structure will be connected to the park lighting system and will provide electrical outlets for picnic use.
There is a possibility later that a gas burner will be added for cooking purposes.

Two students honored for top scholarship
Mike McKee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry McKee of rural route 1, Webster City and a senior at Webster City High School today was named a semifinalist in the 1971-72 National Merit scholarship program.
Maureen Ose, a student at Northeast Hamilton Community high school, was also named as a semifinalist in the 1971-72 National Merit Scholarship program.
The approximately 15,000 semifinalists appointed today are among the nation’s most intellectually talented high school seniors. They will compete for some 3,000 Merit scholarships to be awarded in 1972.
The students were among the highest scorers in Iowa on the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test which was given last February to more than 655,000 students in about 16,600 schools across the nation.

Historical Society plans tour of county Sunday
Little Chicago and Skunk Grove will be among the stops during a tour of historical sites in eastern Hamilton County Sunday.
The tour will begin at J.L. Ruby's depot museum near Williams, starting at 2:30 p.m. The former IC depot was recently moved to the Ruby farm, which is located just east of Williams on the street that leads past St. Mary's Catholic church.
Those interested in the tour can participate in all or a part of it, or meet at the old schoolhouse in Randall, according to George Goeldner of the Hamilton County Historical Society.

Brock, Clausen reign at homecoming
The capacity crowd in Sahai auditorium was presented with music, dancing and singers, all of whom performed during the 2006 Homecoming Coronation. The week's festivities will culminate tonight with the football game against the Algona Bulldogs and the dance tomorrow evening.
Heather Brock was crowned the 2006 Homecoming Queen and Paul Clausen was crowned the Homecoming King. The entire homecoming court includes Mallory Maharry, Danielle Pagel, Monica Trujillo, Ronni Epps, Levi Chelsvig, Alex Barrick, Ross Brown and Adison Kehoe.
WC native to be grand marshal in DM 'Buddy Walk' Saturday
Mia Peterson, a member of the National Down Syndrome Society Board of Directors (NDSS) and chair of the NDSS Self-Advocate Advisory Board, has been named as a Grand Marshall of the 2006 Up With Down Buddy Walk, scheduled for Saturday in Des Moines.
Peterson is Co-Grand Marshal with local television weather personality Ed Wilson of WHO TV, the Des Moines based NBC affiliate. Peterson is a long time self advocate for people with Down syndrome and disabilities and is a native of Webster City.
She returned to Iowa in 2005 after living for seven years in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she worked and served as a self advocate.
Peterson's list of accomplishments are many and include: serving as an Olympic torchbearer for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics; giving inspirational speeches across the country on the message of "Aiming High"; and participating in a national nutritional study with author Joan E. Guthrie Medlen.
Peterson's favorite role is that of self advocate. In that role she speaks out on behalf of people with disabilities.
"We want people to become aware of who we are as a person, not as a disability," said Peterson. "We try to get others to become aware of who we are, to look at what we can do and not what we can't do."

Boone Valley Housing, Inc. awards funds to city for Brewer Creek Trail ridge
The Webster City Recreation and Public Grounds department has received a $3,000 grant from Boone Valley Housing, Inc. for the rehabilitation of the Brewer Creek Trail Bridge at Brewer Creek Park. The grant will be used for painting and replacing the decking of the bridge.
