$50 prize to local group
"Our Gang" quartet, directed by Leo Schwietzer, won first prize of $50 in the amateur contest at Fort Dodge last night.
This contest was to have been held last week at the cattle show, but was postponed because of rain.
This is a group of young people that Webster City can be proud of and look forward to for much fine entertainment. In the group are Annabelle Pfaffenbach, who plays mandolin, Darline Derscheid, who plays mandolin, Lucille Jacobson, who plays guitar and Alonzo Fisher, piano accordion.
There were contestants from all over the state and four prizes were awarded – $50, $25, $15 and $10.

Legion asks for contest
Joins in invitation for 1947 plowing match
The Webster City American Legion post today has added its invitation to those of the Farm Bureau and Chamber of Commerce to hold the 1947 Iowa State plowing contest in Hamilton County.
The invitation was sent to Herb Plambeck, farm editor of radio station WHO at Des Moines who has been in charge of the state meets. The effort was initiated by the county Farm Bureau's board of directors, with the Chamber of Commerce joining in Monday.

Kay Whipple, Dick Brewer head organization
An organization meeting of the Washington Central Student Congress was held by Principal Arney and Miss Lucille Meeker at 3:30 September 11, 1946.
All 32 members, consisting of 2 from each home room were present. Mr. Arney gave general instructions to the members.
Roger Forrester was appointed temporary chairman by the Congress. The election of other officers then followed. Kay Whipple was chosen as girl captain, Dick Brewer as boy captain and Merlyn McConnell, secretary.

White Fox Road surfacing project off to a fast start
The task of surfacing the White Fox road got underway this week as workmen for the Hallett Construction Co. of Crosby, Minn. and the Kaser Construction Co. of Des Moines moved in heavy equipment for the project.
The Hallett firm, which has the contract for the concrete paving of two and one half miles of the road north of Webster City started work at the White Fox school yesterday.
Government builds dam on Boone river
The United States Geological Survey is constructing a concrete dam on the Boone river just downstream from the Millard bridge near Briggs Woods.
Loren Dickenson, Iowa City, hydraulic engineer for the geological survey who is in charge of the project, said the dam is being built to raise the river's level so that the river stage gauge located under the bridge will not freeze up as it did last winter.
The dam will be only two feet high and it will be constructed so that the river will wash over its top.

Kiwanis mark 70th anniversary
Members of the Webster City noon Kiwanis celebrated their 70th anniversary Tuesday. More than 50 Kiwanians and guests marked the occasion with a dinner at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Those honored Tuesday included President Tim Finucan honored the following members: Bill Yungclas, who joined in 1937; George Aden, who joined in 1929; Kermit Doolittle who joined in 1944 and has 40 years of perfect attendance; Max Maxon, who joined in 1944, and Will Miller, who was a charter member of the group in 1921.
Study finds excellent water quality
A three-year study of water quality in Hamilton County has renewed confidence in the safety of drinking water for the county's rural residents.
The Department of Natural Resources-funded study found very few instances of contamination according to Hamilton County Extension Director Ralph Mayer.
The study sampled water twice yearly from two separate wells in each of the county's 16 townships since 1989. The study is unique, and probably more accurate, because it was conducted during both very dry and very wet years.
