Schools Journal to start Wednesday; gets a high rating
The Schools Journal, which has appeared in the Daily Freeman Journal for some years, edited by the Journalism class in the high schools, will be resumed Wednesday. There are eight students in the class this year.
The National Scholastic Press association, in which university, college and high school papers hold membership and which places a rating on each member paper, last year rated the Schools Journal as "excellent," a first class honor rating. This speaks unusually well for the work done here under the direction of Miss Ethel Swanson, head of the department of English.
Garth home best bet in town for cookies, cake
Undisputed queens of Hamilton County in the art of baking cakes and cookies today were a mother and daughter, Webster Cityians, following the release of premium lists by the Hamilton County fair board.
Mrs. R.M. Garth, and her 17 year old daughter Bonnie Jean took more prizes than any other entrants in the baked goods department last week at the county fair.
Mrs. Garth barely eked out a win over her enterprising daughter, with seven awards as compared to her daughter’s six. With first in white layer cakes, chocolate cakes, burnt sugar cakes, spice cookies and fruit cookies, Mrs. Garth dropped to second place in oatmeal and chocolate cookies.

Farmers Bank in new home
The Farmers National Bank of Webster City officially moved into its new building on First St. yesterday when business of the bank was conducted in the new structure.
The bank's moving operations had been underway for more than a week.

Gene Meek will open roller rink Saturday evening
The newly remodeled Olympic Roller Rink will be reopened for business Saturday evening at 7:30 it was announced today by Gen e Meek who recently purchased the former Olympic Youth Center building from Mr. and Mrs. Don Stauffer.
Meek, who operates a roller rink in Ottumwa and has had 13 years' experience in skating rink operations, said the building at the west edge of the city has been completely remodeled with the floors being sanded, a new entrance installed and other improvements made including heating, ventilation and restroom facilities.

Lynx football game to serve as backdrop for donations
In conjunction with the official Day of Prayer and Remembrance, the Webster City High School and Athletic department will be donating all of the proceeds from the gate and concessions at tonights Lynx football game against Charles City to the New York City Fire Department's families who have lost loved ones in this tragedy.
School officials say that they will honor all adult and student passes, but they invite everyone to leave their passes at home tonight, and pay the admission to support the relief efforts. Also any additional donations may be left at the gate or concession stand.
Blood drive appointments booked solid
Hamilton hospital officials have announced today that the appointments for the blood drive scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday are completely full. No other appointments will be taken and no walk-ins will be accepted on either day.

Congregate Meals marks 25th anniversary
Friday is a special day for the Webster City Congregate Meals site. There's a special meal of ham loaf, baked potatoes and cake planned. Several area dignitaries will be special guests.
Friday marks the 25th anniversary of the Congregate Meals program.
The meals program began in 1980 at the former Masonic Temple, now known as The Bridge, and in 1981 moved to their current home in the north section of the building shared with the Webster City Senior Center and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
Jan Green has been the site manager since January and Connie McFadden has been preparing meals at the site for the past five years. The two women serve an average of 40 to 45 meals each weekday. But they don't do the job alone. The women have a group of volunteers who help set tables and clean up. McFadden's daughter, Alison, a high school senior, also comes in for about an hour each day to help prepare the meal.
