Hamilton County boys win second place at State Fair
Hamilton county's hog valuation team at the state fair yesterday won second place, first going to Grundy County. The Hamilton county team is composed of John Fowler of Blairsburg, and Ralph Shaffer and Raymond Cheever of Webster City.
Fowler and Shaffer were also among the individual high ten.
Old fishing gang has fish dinner at Kendall Young
The old fishing gang which has always celebrated the birthdays of its members had a fish dinner at Kendall Young park last evening in honor of R.E. Channer, of this city and Dr. N.C.A. Berg of Ellsworth, whose birthdays fall on the same day.
The only member of the original six who was absent was Dr. G.T. McCauliff of Hamptoin. Members present were the honored guests and H.J. Buell, C.H. Richeson and Harry Hotchkiss, Jim Buell of Massachusetts were invited guests. Claude Richeson cooked the dinner which the boys all say was up to standard in both quality and quantity.
John Burns, whose birthday was Monday, was also a guest. The later part of the evening was spent with cards at the Channer home.

Hamilton County turned out for first postwar showing
Hamilton county residents were back again packing the grandstand, exhibition halls and the midway today after an opening day's crowd of approximately 7,000 had a big day Monday of horse racing, sightseeing and watching the novelty free acts on the stage in front of the amphitheater.
Secretary Lloyd Chapman reported this morning that this county's first full fledged fair since 1941 opened in "better than pre-war style" as the county turned out to find the fair jammed with exhibits.

Duncombe youth busy in new career in music
An audition, then a contract and now one year later, a Duncombe youth is ready to start learning the music publishing business.
Gary Goff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Goff, got his "brak of a lifetime" at the 1970 Hamilton county fair when he agreed to sign a contract with the Top Chart Music Publishing Co., after he completed high school last spring.
This summer, starting on July 23, Goff went on a state fair tour with her interviewers Oscar and Lonza from the Grand Ole Opry. This will be followed by a year in Nashville, Tenn., to learn the music publishing business and at the same time he'll continue playing bass guitar for Oscar and Lonzo at future fairs.
At present, Goff, who has written more than 50 songs since a 1964 song-writing beginning, has two songs out to Roger Miller, one to Glen Campbell and according to Mrs. Goff, "various other stars including Tex Ritter.
"For an 18 year old boy," she added, "his future looks pretty bright.
Mrs. Goff went on to say that he has no current plans to return to school, but he will consider it after his first year in the publishing business. "Then," she said, "if he feels he needs it, he'll go back to school in music."
While thousands of Hamilton county residents were enjoying their fair, the Goffs were weekend hosts to their son and Oscar and Lonzo. Mrs. Goff said they were "quite nice people. Gary couldn't be in better hands," she added.
That Saturday evening, the family traveled with the group to Sac City and watched their son and his bosses perform.

Study new name for old Highway 20
Webster City business persons, Chamber of Commerce representatives and city officials Thursday met with Dwight Stevens of the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) in an attempt to have old U.S. 20 retain its former number. However, Stevens told the group that new 20 will keep its designation. The DOT representative took a proposal to call the old route "Business 20" back to the DOT administration. Several city businesses have reported problems with out of towners not finding their firms since the U.S. 20 designation was removed.
County Pork Producers honor contest winners at picnic
The Hamilton County Pork producers sponsored a picnic Thursday evening at Briggs Woods shelter house No. 3 in honor of those who participated in the carcass contest and the people who supported them. The Pork Producers financed the meal, the trophies and the premiums for the Aug. 6 contest. The Hamilton County Porkettes served the meal and between 90 and 100 people attended. The awards were presented by David Young, president of the Hamilton County Pork Producers. Lauri Mourlam received first place, while her brother Kevin Mourlam received second place. Lauri and Kein are the children of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Mourlam of Woolstock.

Thanks from the kids
Students at Sunset Heights Elementary gathered outside on Friday with their teachers, parents and a number of ABI ambassadors to celebrate the ribbon cutting for the school's new playground equipment. Playground committee members, Ted Tomashevsky and Doug Koons held the ribbon as Alyssa Koons snipped the ribbon. Several students also spoke during the ceremony on behalf of Sunset to thank the community for it's support.
