Even though rain was forecast each day of the 40th Annual Doodlebug reunion, the organizers of the reunion deemed it a great success.
"We were able to get every scheduled ride in, despite the rain forecast," said Gerald Huisman, club president.
Nearly 80 people attended the events which began officially on Wednesday, and wrapped up with a banquet on Saturday night.
Members of the Doodle Bug Club were sighted all throughout Webster City last week. Rides along the Boone River trail and to the airport are part of the annual tradition.
On Friday, the Doodle Bug Reunion participants started their day at the Wilson Brewer Park museum, another tradition that they have developed over the 40 years.
But then they did something new. With the cooperation of the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department, they headed out for their first ride ever to Kamrar, which was also their longest ride.
About 30 members attempted to ride their scooters to Kamrar, according to Huisman. About 25 made it on their scooters, with John Hemingway, who drove the SAG wagon, picking up about five scooters that had various mechanical problems on the route.
Around 60 met at the Lions Club in Kamrar where they lunched on Pickles' Pizza at noon. If they didn't ride a scooter, they drove their vehicles to the Kamrar location.
Not all members of the Doodle Bug Club owned Doodle Bugs, explained Huisman. Some of the scooters driven to Kamra were made by Cushman or Honda scooters for example. "You don't have to have a Doodle Bug to be a member," he said.
"The neat thing about our club is that they are all very grateful and appreciative," said Huisman. "They were happy to do the Kamrar run," he said, "The rides make it more enjoyable."
The last of the members enjoyed breakfast at HyVee Sunday morning. But then, the last of the Doodle Bugs went home until next year.
